Introduction of Dartford

 

Dartford is the largest town in the Borough of Dartford, Kent, England. It lies 18 miles south-east of Central London and adjoins the London Borough of Bexley to its west. Through the Dartford Crossing, it can be reached via Thurrock in Essex, across the Thames estuary.  In medieval times, Dartford was a market town. Although it is primarily a commuter town for Greater London today, it has a rich cultural, industrial, and religious heritage. Currently, the main through-road bypasses the city, an important rail hub. Dartford-born cricketer Edward Brander played for Kent in the 1870s. In 1964, Richard Cant, an actor from Dartford, was born. 1935 Dave Charnley was born in Dartford and was British Lightweight Champion from 1957 to 1963.

Wilmington is a village and civil parish in Dartford Borough, Kent, England. It is situated 2.7 miles south of Dartford, 3.5 miles north of Swanley, and 4.3 miles southeast of Bexleyheath. It lies adjacent to the Greater London border in Kent.


History of Wilmington, Kent

Wilmington is thought to have been the site of a significant Celtic settlement. In this location, the Cantii tribe fought Roman invaders near Leyton Cross and Joyden’s Wood. An estate in the village was the residence of king-making Richard Neville, 16th Earl of Warwick, during the reign of Edward IV.
